While traveling our eyes are opened to the struggles of the world. When you just stay at home it’s easy to just stay in a little bubble and not realize as much what is going on around you. As soon as you step outside your front door you’ll quickly see how much humans are destroying the environment. We need to be doing more to keep our home a beautiful place and while traveling you can make sure your environmental impact is lessened.
Mind Your Personal Choices
Have you ever looked into any period cup reviews? If not, you really should. These are great to use while traveling because they take up less space, will save you money and most importantly save the environment. Just one pad is the equivalent of four plastic bags. Think about the amount of pads you use each month and you’ll quickly see how damaging this is. It’s definitely not something you want to leave behind in your next destination for them to deal with.
Pick Your Transport Wisely
Flying is the most damaging to the environment. If you can, it’s better to take a bus or train but we know that isn’t always the case. If you must fly it’s a really good idea not to take them just for short flights. It’s also a good idea to look into the airline and pick one with higher occupancy rates and more efficient aircrafts.
Choose Accommodation Carefully
This doesn’t even mean picking a place that costs more money. Often the smaller, cheaper places might be more down to earth and paying attention to their impact. Choose a place that recycles, composts, uses solar energy or maybe even uses solar energy. I’ve stayed in places that only turn on the air conditioning at night when people are always in the room and turned it off during the day to save power.
A lot of your actions matter. When visiting a country you should never litter or overuse energy. It’s a great idea to take short showers and limit the amount of detergent you are contributing by doing laundry only when necessary. Another good idea is to only choose activities that don’t have a large impact on the environment.
It’s important to be careful about what you decide to buy and bring home from your trips. It’s a great idea to always buy locally and help out the people living in the community instead of big businesses but it also matters what you are buying. Do your research and never buy products that are made for any endangered species like animal hides.
